Why Plant in the Fall?
While the gardening bug usually bites most in the spring, as the long grey winter begins to release its hold on our region, we in the PNW are lucky to be able to plant most of the year. In fact, fall is an ideal time to plant for several reasons.
In the fall, the ground is still warm, which allows roots to spread and establish themselves deeply. This is especially important for a plant’s successful transition from a container to the soil in your garden and helps ensure its health for years to come.
Fall is also an excellent time to amend the soil with composts and conditioners, as well as to add top mulch. Need a little advice? This illustrated recipe for planting success can help you when you transplant your new finds.
Fall is a great time to plant because the heat of summer has passed and watering requirements are lessened as Mother Nature lends a helping hand with the onset of rain. This doesn’t mean you don’t have to water - you do! - but with cooler temperatures and occasional rain, the transition for plants to their new homes is made easier.
Remember that regular watering the first few years of a new plant's life is still important to ensure optimal growth (even if the plant is "drought-tolerant"). Watering is the most important thing you can do to help your plant thrive and you can learn more about effective watering on our blog.
