Akane Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Akane’)
Bright orange new growth in the spring that slowly turns fresh green over the growing season. In the fall, leaves are ablaze in orange, yellow, and red tones. Medium-sized dwarf grows slowly to 8’-12’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade. Avoid extreme heat.
Katsura Hime Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Katsura hime’)
A dwarf version of the famous Katsura variety. Brilliant orange growth in the spring gradually fades to light tones with orange leaf margins and finally fully green leaves by summer. Fall color is orange-red. Grows to 6’-8’ tall and wide in 10-15 years. Part shade.
Fireglow Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Fireglow’)
An upright, red-leafed variety with a slow growth habit and dense branches. Fall color can be fiery scarlet. Looks beautiful paired with golds and bright greens. Grows to 10’ tall and wide in 10-15 years. Part shade to sun.
Koto No Ito Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Koto no ito’)
Incredibly lacy foliage emerges in the spring with crimson tones, then quickly turns green. Bright green bark adds interest to the garden in the winter months. Brilliant gold-orange foliage in the fall. Grows to 6’-10’ tall and wide in 15+ years. Part shade to sun.
Butterfly Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’)
A superb upright tree with a vase shape. Mature foliage is variegated white with pink splashes and a lacy appearance. In the fall, leaves take on red tones either in the margins or the whole leaves. 12’-15’ tall at maturity. Part shade.
Fernleaf Full Moon Maple (Acer japonicum ‘Aconitifolium’)
A beautiful small tree with deeply divided foliage and delicate red seeds dangling below the branches. Great for containers or small-space gardens. One of the best maples for fall color with intense orange-red foliage. Grows to 8’-15’ tall and wide in 10-15 years. Sun to part shade.
Shishio Hime Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Shishio Hime’)
A dwarf, spreading, deciduous shrub with small green leaves tipped in red and vivid yellow fall color. It forms a dense mound that is perfect in a container or rock garden. Grows to 3’-6’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade. Avoid extreme heat.
Olsen’s Frosted Strawberry Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Olsen’s Frosted Strawberry’)
A small tree with an open habit and unusual stipple foliage. Spring growth emerges glowing strawberry-pink, fading over months to cream and green. In the fall, leaves turn orange. Grows to 8’-12’ tall and 6’-8’ wide over 10-15 years. Part shade.
Filigree Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Filigree’)
A staff favorite! This spreading mounded Japanese maple has some of the most delicate and dissected leaves available. The fresh green color holds through summer and turns to bright golden-orange in fall. Grows to 2’-3’ tall and wide in 10 years. Part shade.
Bihou Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Bihou’)
A new, small, upright tree with yellow-green leaves and coral bark. Fall foliage is orange-gold while the bark on twigs and branches turns vivid yellow, orange, and coral in winter. The Japanese name means “beautiful mountain range.” 12’-15’ tall and 8’-10’ wide in 10 years. Part shade to sun.
Bonfire Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Bonfire’)
A mid-sized dwarf that produces spectacular orange-pink new growth in spring. As the season progresses, the foliage becomes more and more green. Bright red fall color. 8’-12’ tall and wide in 10-15 years. Part shade to sun.
Ukigumo Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Ukigumo’)
A medium to slow grower, Ukigumo (also called “Floating Clouds Maple”) has gorgeous light green leaves variegated in tones of white and pink. The Variegation appears more strongly as the tree matures and can vary year to year. Grows to 6’-12’ tall and wide over 10-15 years. Part shade.
Willow Leaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Atrolineare’)
Ribbon-like leaves evoke the texture of bamboo. The leaves emerge purple-red in the spring, turn to bronzy-green in the summer. and light up with yellow-orange tones in the fall. Upright habit. 8’-12’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade.
Rising Sun Japanese Maple (Acer japonicum ‘Rising Sun’)
Needing little pruning, this maple can be grown as a tree or a multi-stemmed shrub. Large, fan-like green leaves turn brilliant red, yellow, and orange tones in the fall. Upright to spreading habit. Grows to 10’-12’ tall and 12’-15’ wide in 10 years. Part shade.
Red Pygmy Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Red Pygmy’)
A dwarf, upright tree with small, narrow-lobed purple-red leaves in spring that change to green-red by summer. It has some of the thinnest and longest foliage of any red-leaf Japanese maple. 6’-9’ tall and wide in 15 years. Cool sun to part shade.
Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’)
A Japanese maple for all seasons! Light chartreuse summer leaves turn a striking orange-yellow in the fall. Coral-tinted bark is a stand-out in winter. The youngest wood has the brightest color and fades to green as it ages. More sun equals brighter bark. Grows to 12’-15’ tall and 6’-10’ side. Full sun to part shade.
Pine Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki gawa’)
This arching maple has green leaves that change to orange and red in the fall. Unique rough, fissured bark develops after a few years and offers year-round interest. Grows to 10’-15’ tall and 7’-12’ wide in 10-15 years. Part shade to sun.
Omurayama Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Omurayama’)
A small tree with a distinctive horizontal form and weeping habit. Delicate, deeply-cut green leaves give the impression of a small weeping willow. Outstanding fall color ranging from rich gold to brilliant crimson. Grows to 12’-13’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade.
Crimson Queen Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Crimson Queen’)
This variety is noted for holding its rich, red leaf color from spring through summer. Color will be accented with green when planted in shadier locations. Excellent in containers. 5’-7’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade.
Red Wood Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Red Wood’)
A slow-growing variety with bold coral-red bark that shines in the winter landscape. Leaves emerge bright green in the spring, slowly darkening, then turning golden yellow in fall. Grows to 20’-25’ over a very long period of 50+ years. Sun to part shade.
Sister Ghost Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sister Ghost’)
A broad, upright tree growing 10’-15’ tall and 8’-10’ wide. Light yellow-green leaves are prominently-veined and often have a subtle pink blush. Foliage has vibrant yellow, orange, and red highlights in the fall. Part shade.
Azuma Murasaki Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Azuma murasaki’)
Bright red leaf stems accent deeply-cut leaves which open silvery-green and mature to a greenish-purple with dark green undersides. Scarlet foliage in the fall. Densely-branched rounded habit, usually as wide as it is tall. Mature height is 13’-20’. Full sun to part shade.
Confused Lion Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Kurui jishi’)
An unusual dwarf specimen with curiously upturned leaf edges. In the fall, foliage turns to tones of orange and gold. Grows slowly to 4’-6’ tall and wide. Sun to part shade. Avoid extreme heat.
Orange Dream Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’)
Bright orange spring leaves gradually fade to yellow with an orange border. Bright green bark stands out beautifully against the leaves and darker conifers. Grows to 15’-20’ tall and wide. Prefers part shade.
Orangeola Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Orangeola’)
A beautiful Japanese Maple with a weeping, dense habit and finely serrated leaves. Leaves offer a kaleidoscope of color ranging from green to purple with orange-red fall foliage. Grows slightly taller than wide, to 4’ x 3’ in 10 years and to 8’ tall at full maturity. Sun to part shade.
