ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is native to Eastern Africa. It is a wonderful plant for low light areas of the house. It doesn’t require a lot of attention to watering, since it forms an underground tuber that stores water. Also, it’s thick stem bases store water. ZZ slowly grows to 3-4 ft. tall and wide. Yellowish, podlike flowers may appear occasionally in summer. Also known as Eternity Plant, Emerald Frond, or Aroid Palm.

CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS

Light
Bright, indirect light is preferred. Keep it out of direct sun. Tolerates very low light.

Temperature
The minimum winter temperatures are 40-50ºF. Warmer summer temperatures will increase plant growth and leaf production.

Soil
3 parts quality potting soil, 1 part perlite.

Water
Water with tepid water only when the top inch of the soil is dry. Water sparingly in winter. Overwatering will cause the leaves to yellow and can kill the plant. Don’t allow the pot to sit in water. When in doubt, underwater — if too dry, ZZ plant may drop its leaves, but they usually resprout from the root system.

Humidity
Mist the leaves occasionally in winter.

Fertilizer
During spring thru autumn, use 1/4 strength of a liquid fertilizer monthly. Don’t fertilize the plant in winter.
