One of the best things about spending time at Swansons is discovering new plants that arrive throughout the year from our growers (“Wow, what’s THAT?!?”) Here are some of our fall arrivals that we think you really ought to know about.
Bold foliage for the shaded garden
Bergenia ciliata ‘Dumbo’
This fantastic foliage selection has huge fuzz covered leaves that make an excellent contrast with grasses and ferns. Doesn’t even need flowers to be cool.
Mukgenia ‘Nova Flame’
A new hybrid made by crossing Bergenia and Mukdenia , the thick, serrated edged leaves turn a brilliant red as fall approaches putting on a great show as the leaves die back for winter. Brick red flowers are carried above the foliage in spring
Astilboides tabularis
Rounded, disk shaped leaves up to 18” across look fabulous with Hakonechloa grass and the complex foliage of Sorbaria ‘Sem’. Thrives in a wet spot in the garden.
Sun loving bee attractors
Echinacea ‘Sombrero Flamenco Orange’
As orange as it gets on this compact, dense, free flowering winner. A bee and butterfly attractor that is low water use too.
Trachelium caeruleum
Rarely offered, the time is now to get these beauties. Bird and butterfly attracting, they are some of the most elegant flowers there are with their soft purple clusters. Currently sold out, but a must have for next Spring!
Perovskia ‘Silvery Blue’
A new Russian Sage with the most silver foliage to date. A real knockout. The blue flowers are held on this compact grower mid-summer to fall. Did someone say hummingbirds?
