Mushrooms make their appearance in lawns and gardens anytime, but more conspicuously in the fall. That’s when wetter weather and cooler temperatures make ideal conditions for them to emerge. When fall arrives, it always inspires me to nest. I search out new recipes, spend weekends cooking and baking, and then test my creations on my friends and family. There’s just something about the chill in the air and the early sunsets that encourage a hearty, home-cooked meal or sweet treat. Sure, you can buy garlic, but for the best flavor - and an incredible sense of satisfaction - nothing beats growing it yourself. Unlike most vegetables, garlic is planted in the fall but not harvested until the following summer, making it a very long-season crop that’s worth the wait. In fact, it can be very encouraging to plant something new in late fall when all around you, most plants are fading in anticipation of winter.
Fall Festival at Swansons was October 22-23. This was a fabulous weekend event full of family fun! We filled our North Greenhouse with Autumn-themed kids’ activities and games, and even a few baby goats! It was a whirlwind of fun from tractor hay rides to Pumpkin Putt Putt to racing veggie cars to autumn arts and crafts.
Saturday night was our annual Holiday Party, a night of socializing, shopping, toasting the upcoming holiday season with wine and cider, and taking camel and reindeer selfies - usually after a glass or two ;) Check out our slideshow of party photos at the bottom of the post.
This year was even better because we were lucky to be able to partner with Whole Foods Market to throw a benefit event for the Ballard Food Bank. After our Summer Nights at Swansons events, which helped support both Ballard Food Bank and Whole Kids Foundation, it was a little like a reunion!
On Saturday evening, September 12th, Swansons Nursery hosted Ladies' Night Out, a fabulous annual event with wine, food, live music, and displays of local artisans. Over 200 guests enjoyed the lovely ambience of a Seattle summer evening, excited to see proceeds from the event benefit Teen Feed.
